There are many different types of plastic surgery, with lip augmentation being one of them. It is a common procedure said to give you plumper, fuller lips. Nowadays, dermal filler is injected into your lips. This type of surgery should only be performed by a certified plastic surgeon such as Joel Aronowitz. Continue reading to learn everything you need to know about lip augmentation, including risks and benefits.

Types of Lip Augmentation

Various types of lip augmentation include:

  • Lip fillers: This is when a healthcare provider injects filler into your lips or around your mouth.
  • Lip implants: This procedure involves a plastic surgeon making a tiny incision in each corner of your mouth and putting implants into your lips.
  • Lip lift: With a lip lift, the surgeon will get rid of additional skin between your upper lip and nose to lift your lips.
  • Fat grafting: With fat grafting, a surgeon will take some fat from another part of your body, such as your stomach, and inject it into your lips.

Depending on the type of lip augmentation you receive, they may last anywhere between six months to a lifetime. For example, lip fillers are only said to last between six months to a year, while lip lifts are permanent.

Benefits of Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentations are performed to give your lips a younger, fuller appearance. There typically isn’t any downtime with this type of procedure.

Certain types of lip augmentation procedures are reversible. For instance, if you are not happy with how your surgery turned out, your plastic surgeon can take out the implant. However, if you have lip fillers and are not satisfied with the results, your surgeon will need to dissolve them using hyaluronidase.

Risks of Lip Augmentation

You can speak with your surgeon about any issues you may be having or are concerned about following your surgery. There are more risks and complications when you undergo surgical lip augmentation versus nonsurgical lip augmentation.

Common risks and complications are:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Allergic reactions
  • Swelling
  • Scarring
  • Lip stiffening
  • Uneven lips

Recovery

Depending on the type of lip augmentation procedure you underwent, your recovery time will differ. For example, there’s no recovery time or downtime with lip fillers. However, if you undergo surgical lip augmentation, it may take up to a few weeks for swelling and redness to go away.

With any type of nonsurgical lip augmentation procedure, you can usually return to work immediately. Surgical procedures will require a little downtime. Your plastic surgeon may advise you to stay away from exercising and any vigorous activities for a few weeks following your surgery.

Furthermore, your surgeon will provide you with a few instructions to help your lips heal. For example, you will be told to eat only soft foods for the first several days, elevate your head while you are sleeping, and avoid moving your lips excessively.

As always, if you notice any of the following symptoms, you should notify your surgeon immediately:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection or allergic reaction
  • Bruising that doesn’t subside
  • Extreme swelling
  • Fever
